CAN PARENTS UNDERSTAND THEIR CHILDREN AND VICE VERSA?

Everybody wants to be the best parents they can for their children, but it is the most difficult task for both: parents and children.
​
First of all, the main problem is when the children become teenagers. Parents and teenagers do not understand one another because of age difference, differences in opinions regarding activities and the high expectations parents have of their children.
​
Firstly, parents have a great responsibility bringing up their children providing them with food, clothing, shelter and a good education. Therefore, parents are usually serious and strict because of this.
​
Secondly, teenagers are the people who are experimenting with many things, such as relationships, fashion, technology and drugs. Consequently, many parents are over-protective. They feel they should guide their young children in the right direction, but teenagers want their independence; they do not understand one another’s desires.
​
In addition to this, another problematic aspect is parents’ expectations. They want their children to go to college or university and to have a good job someday. However, some young teenagers are not serious about their studies and this is the reason why parents get annoyed with them. Although parents try to instil in their children the importance of education to achieve success, teenagers resist their parents’ advice.
​
To sum up, children should listen and follow their parents’ advice so that they receive good directions in their lives and, likewise, parents should listen to what their teens have to say about their own lives.

GENERATION GAP
​
Is there a generation gap between old and young people? Undoubtedly, there are many differences between generations, especially between grandparents and grandchildren. Nevertheless, in some aspects not so much is changed with the passage of time.
​
The greatest difference is due to technology. In former times, people had more difficulties in their daily lives. For example, because computers did not exist, everything was calculated by hand and postal mail was used. Technology has also changed the way people interact with other people. In the past, social networks did not exist and conversations were always face to face. Nowadays, people abuse social network, so their relationship is losing that personal touch. Another difference lies in the way of thinking. Currently, young people have a more open mind over topics such as sexuality or abortion.

In contrast, there are thins that have not changed so much over time, such as traditions, political ideas, religion and gender differences. It is obvious that gender discrimination has decreased in comparison to 50 years ago, but it still exists. For this reason, it is very important that the new generations for gender equality, and especially for eradicating gender violence.
​
After this analysis, it can be said that the gap between generations may be enormous. Although there are many gadgets and devices today that may make our lives easier, we must be aware that they, however, may make the older ones feel far away from the younger ones.
