HERRERA DE PISUERGA

http://www.quetiempo.es/foto-herrera-de-pisuerga_250702.htm

Herrera de Pisuerga is a small town that is in the North–East of Palencia (Spain), on the river bank of the rivers Pisuerga and Burejo. It has about 2.200 people. Its weather is continental, with cold winters and hot summers. The springs and autumn are very short.

It has been an important population since the Romans age. The Romans called it “Pisoraca”, and it was occupied by the Legion IIII Macedonica.  After them it was occupied by other civilizations like Visigoths.

Herrera is the head of the region, and offers different services like, the town hall, a medical center, a school, a high school, a church, a pharmacy, supermarkets, parks, sports areas…….All the services that anyone need to live comfortable.

The economy is based on the local services, the cheese factory "Granja la Luz", the flowers nurseries “Pismaver”, and agriculture, mainly the orchard.

In Herrera there are a lot off landmarks that you can visit. If you like history, you can visit the Roman museum, the remains of the Roman walls, and you can start a Romanic tour, visiting several churches which there are this area. The Romanic of the North of Palencia is considered the best art Romanic in Spain.

If you prefer outdoors activities surrounded by environment, you can walk along the Canal of Castilla, visit its locks, and make one trip on the ship along the canal. Also, you can visit the center of interpretation of the Canal to know all about it.

Herrera the Pisuerga is also well known for its crabs. “The crab” festival is very famous, in it you can enjoy and eat different dishes made with them.

In my opinion Herrera de Pisuerga is a fabulous town, where you can stay a few days forgetting your stressful live, but very hard to live in all year round.

ORBANEJA DEL CASTILLO

www.agronewscastillayleon.com

GENERAL INFORMATION

Orbaneja del Castillo is a little village in the North of Burgos where nowadays 30 people live. Everyday these people can enjoy its marvellous surroundings, old architecture and the most beautiful waterfall I have ever seen.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Its economy is based on tourism. While thousands of people visit this place every year, only 50 houses, located on the slope of a hill, are sited in Orbaneja. All of the buildings are made of stone. In the middle of the village runs a little stream, which falls turning into an amazing waterfall, flowing into the river Ebro. However it´s very difficult to park, lots of cars arrive there every day. People leave them on the side of the main road. The weather is hard, worse in winter, when the ice is always part of the streets.

WHAT TO SEE / WHAT TO DO

There, you should see the waterfall and the “water´s cave”, where the steam originates and flows through the mountain. It is very beautiful to have a walk around the village.

PERSONAL OPINION

I have chosen this place because it is one of those small wonders of nature that you cannot forget.

SAN  SEBASTIAN

http://www.sansebastianturismo.com/es/

Saint Sebastian was founded by Sancho el Sabio in 1180 but before that, it had been a monastery. It’s the capital city of Guipuzcoa and it belongs to the Basque Autonomus Community, which is located on the north coast of the Iberian Peninsula, more concretely, it lies on the coast of the Bay of Biscay.

It has a population of over 168,500 people and it’s next to the Cantabrian Sea so there are many tourists in summer.

As Saint Sebastian is located next to the sea, it has an economy based on commerce and tourism. Nowadays, people are developing projects on food, they are researching new methods of cooking, which are famous in the country. In fact, Saint Sebastian has the most important chefs.

In the city there are important historic buildings and landmarks like La Concha Bay, Maria Cristina Bridge, Saint Sebastian Cathedral, Basilica of Saint Mary of Coro, Victoria Eugenia Theatre and many more.

The weather is warm, not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter, however, it rains many days of the year.

Events such as Saint Sebastian International Film Festival have given it an International dimension and this year it is the European Capital of Culture.

What I like best about Saint Sebastian is that it’s more cosmopolitan than other Spanish cities.

SANTANDER

http://eltomavistasdesantander.com/2014/01/24/19-escenas-tomavistas-santander/

Santander is in the north of Soain, near the coast, it is the capital of Cantabria. It´s got a population of 175000 habitants, but in summer it increase until 385000 habitants. It is the biggest city in Cantabria.

Santander has got a great economy because it has a lot of tourists, especially in summer. It has got some institutions like hospitals and universities and the most important in ´´Banco Santander´´. Since the 1950s Santander has grown incredibly. The main mains of transport in Santander is the buses, but there are a lot of cars, it has got several sea ports where there are boats and a docking bay where there is a ferry to go to England, and there is also an airport.

The weather changes a lot of in summer: one day it is hot and the next it is raining all the day. In Winter, autumn and spring it rains frequently.

The most important landmarks in Santander are the Cathedral of Santander, ´´ El Sardinero´´, a natural area built in 1840, and the Palace of Magdalena. An important activity you should do in Santander is walking in the beach or near the beach, it is very calm.

I have chosen this city because it is the place where I go for my summer holidays and I like it so much.

This city is quite big, touristy, clean lovely, traditional and sometimes a bit noisy. In order to go around Seville you can use many transports, for example: the train, the ship, the plane, the underground, the tram, the buses, cars and also the bicycle.

THE WEATHER

Generally the weather in Seville is hot and dry in summer and, rain and smooth in winter.

WHAT TO SEE / WHAT TO DO

There are many places to see in Seville but the main ones that you have to see are The Seville Cathedral, The Giralda, The Real Alcazar, The Golden Tower and Plaza de España. And also you must go to restaurants in order to eat its traditional food.

TUDELA DE DUERO

  • It is a village near Valladolid, about 16 km away. It has over 8.700 people but in summer there are more than 9.000 people because people who live in Valladolid come here to spend this season. The weather is cool in winter and very hot in summer, Mediterranean’s weather.

  • It is a place where you find a lot of wine cellars where they make a good wine. If you visit this village you have to visit Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion’s church, it is amazing, like a Cathedral but smaller. It was built in sixteenth century. Other places that you can visit are Humilladero and Santo Cristo’s hermitage. In the first one there are usually exhibitions of paintings.

  • The asparagus’ festival is very famous and it is celebrated on May. Asparagus are cooked in different ways. While you are eating one of this dishes you are seeing the rest of Festival.

  • Tudela is surrounded by the Duero’s river where you can practice canoeing; there are a lot of sports activities like karate, football, dance, etc..

  • Tudela has a famous bulls’ festival that you can see if you go in August. When I come here I had never seen a bullfighting, people who have been born here enjoy this festival a lot; it is cruel for me.

  • Tudela is a place where you can live very pacefully and you know people more closely than in a big city. In my opinion it is a comfortable village.

The weather.

Lisbon is a hot city. During the spring it’s sunny , but in autumn and winter the days are rainy and windy. So the best moment to visit it is in spring or at the end of the summer when the temperatures are softer.

NEW YORK

I think that it is the most interesting city in the world where I have ever been to.

New York is in the Northeast of the United States. It is the most populated city in this country. In New York there are five districts: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. It is famous for Its Skyscrapers and monuments.

The principal buildings in New York are the skyscrapers. In this city there are 883.

However, in this city you can also visit the most famous parks in the world, the Central Park. Here you can go to play baseball because there are seven baseballs fields, visit the lakes or a small palace, and you can go to the zoo and see a lot of kind of animals. Last year the Central Park was visited by 25 million of tourist.

On the other hand, the most used means of transport is public transport. In Manhattan more than half of the people don´t have a car and they use underground, taxis or buses.

In New York there is Atlantic weather. It rains a lot all year round. In July the temperature is about 27ºC, but in January it´s about 6ºC.

In contrast, in New York you can do anything. You can visit museums, monuments, a lot of shops in the fifth Avenue, go to a musical in Broadway Street, fly by helicopter, see a basket or baseball match… everything that you want to do, you will find it.

PARIS

GENERAL INFORMATION

Paris is the capital of France. It’s in the center of France. It has around 2,244 millions in habitants which is a big number.

Have you ever heard of the City of Love? Paris is famous because of that and also because it has very famous monuments like the Eiffel Tower and the Arch of Triumph.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Paris is a very developed city. It’s very big and so beautiful. The squares, which are very big, are always full of people, and the city is divided by the Seine, a clean river with transparent waters.

In Paris it is not good to travel by car because there’s too much traffic. The best option is to use the underground or the bus.

THE WEATHER

In spring and autumn the weather is warm but it rains a lot. In summer it’s really hot and in winter the city is covered by the snow.

WHAT TO SEE/ WHAT TO DO

There are a lot of monuments to see and things to do: going to the Eiffel Tower and going up, visiting the Arch of Triumph, visiting the Louvre, going to Notre Dame and going up to visit the Sacre Coeur, going to the Gardens of Luxemburg, visiting the Town Hall and going shopping to the Lafayette Galleries. And don’t forget to eat a lot of crepes!

PERSONAL OPINION

I’ve been to Paris twice and I think It’s a fantastic city that everyone has to go once in their lives.

I think the most beautiful monument is the Eiffel Tower and I think that visiting the Louvre with a guide is better than visiting it without a guide.

LEÓN

http://diariorural.com/wp-content/2011/05/la-catedral-de-leon2.jpg

GENERAL INFORMATION

León is a small city located in the northwest of Spain. It was founded in 79 A.D. by the Romans as a military encampment of the Legio VII Gemina which had the mission to protect the gold mines against the northern warbands. Later, it was a strong force in the war between the Moors and the Christians. In 1188 A.D the first European Courts were summoned in Leon so it is considered “the cradle of parliamentarism”.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

León has not any industrial center nor developed agriculture (except in some areas like “El Bierzo”), its economy is based mainly on the touristic income. It is also a communication center between Asturias, Galicia and the rest of Spain, accordingly it has well maintained roads, most of them are motorways, high-speed trains and an airport. Leon’s weather is typically continental with long cold winters and short hot summers. Spring and autumn almost don’t exist. It often rains and sometimes snows in winter.

WHAT TO SEE / WHAT TO DO

The city has one of the most important artistic heritage in Spain. There are a lot of valuable landmarks in Leon but three are the most visited:

- The Gothic Cathedral, which is the main sight, was finished in the 15th century. It’s well-known for its 1.800 m2 of unique stained glass windows.

- The Basilica of San Isidoro, glory of the Romanic style, with the tombs of the Kings of Leon. Its museum has the wonderful chalice of Doña Urraca which is considered by many researchers as the “Holy Grail”.

- Convent of San Marcos, an old jail where Quevedo, the famous writer, was imprisoned. It had  previously belonged to the Knights of St. James. It is currently a great luxurious hotel.

Moreover, you have a lot of leisure options at different times of the year, for instance, the Holy Week has been declared as International tourist interest, and furthermore, León is a stage of the famous “St. James’ Way” so you could give this fantastic journey a try.

PERSONAL OPINION

You can’t miss the opportunity to visit this small, peaceful and friendly city which is waiting for you to show its wonders. You should begin your tour visiting the main landmarks in the daylight and then, at night, relax and enjoy the streets crowded with people having a drink and tasting the local food in the “Barrio Humedo”. However, take some winter clothes because it’s always cold here!

                                        OVIEDO

Oviedo is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain. The city has the mountain ranges of the Monte Naranco and Picos de Europa.

It has a population of approximately 200.000 inhabitants.

Oviedo was important in the early history of Spain. During Spain’s resistance against the moors, it was a cultural, political and religious city. It was founded in 757 AD by the king Fruela I.

Oviedo has the prestigious event Princess of Asturias awards, held at the Theatre Campoamor.

It’s a great small city to explore, I love the beautiful wooden historical balconies; It seems to be one giant open air museum because there are many statues everywhere, for example, Woody Allens’s Statue.

It was an interesting old town with various monuments, the best way to get around is walking. The old part is called the “Casco Antiguo” where you can find restored buildings and squares, some of the most popular are the Town Hall, the Plaza del Fontán, the Cathedral of San Salvador, Museum of the Church, etc…

There are many places to eat regional specialities, traditional food, tapas, like fabada, cabrales cheese, rice pudding, etc… and the natural cider, very famous all over Spain. Drinking it is a ritual in itself.

It has a maritime climate caused by its proximity to the sea, Oviedo’s warmest month is in August. It rains many days.

Asturias is full of coastal and mountain villages that you have to visit and spend some time in. Picos de Europa National Park is a great place for hiking and climbing.

The people there are really nice and kind, I like going to Oviedo very much.

SAN SEBASTIAN

https://www.google.es/search?q=san+sebastian

San Sebastian is a city in the North of Spain. It is a tourist city on the North coast between two important cities, Santander and Bilbao. Its population is around 200,000 people but in the summer there are a lot of tourists.

San Sebastian was founded by the king of Navarra in 1180. Now, it is famous for its events, gastronomy and because it is one of the most beautiful cities in our country.

Over the last decades, San Sebastian has been chosen by Real Spanish House on holiday times, which was a definitive help to make the tourist activity become the main base of its economy.

In San Sebastian there are traditional and modern people at the same time. The traveler has to know that it isn’t a cheap city and it also is usually packed with tourists.

As for transport, we can say that the bus is the best way to go around the city but it is recommended to go sightseeing on foot, although it is very important to carry an umbrella. Unfortunately, it is one of the most rainy cities in Spain and while there aren’t any hot summers and cold winters.

One of the most important landmarks is La Concha Bay, which is more famous than the Old Town. Also we cannot forget that this city is full of shops, museums, cinemas and, of course, the Kursaal, which has held San Sebastian Film Festival since 1999.

In my opinion, San Sebastian is a friendly city where you can feel that all things are made for the population.

Finally, I think you should go on the second weekend of November and live the biggest sport event, an important event which consists on a race from Behobia to San Sebastian.
